Why It's Important To
VOTE INDEPENDENT

  • Community accountability: Independents answer directly to their community, not to party donors, vested interests, or party machines.
  • Break the duopoly: Challenge the major party system that too often ignores local concerns in favor of party politics.
  • Local focus: Prioritize community issues instead of following party lines dictated from distant headquarters.
  • Greater transparency: Make decisions based on merit and community needs, not back room deals.
  • Balance of power: Ensure all voices are heard and prevent extreme policies from either major party.
  • Diverse representation: Bring fresh perspectives and represent community concerns often ignored by major parties.

How To
VOTE INDEPENDENT

  • Number all boxes: Number your candidate of choice in order of your preference 1 to 7 to make your vote count.
  • Put independents first: Rank independent candidates higher in your preferences if you want to support them.
  • Your vote always counts: With preferential voting, your vote flows to your next choice if your first preference doesn't win.
  • Research candidates: Use voter guides, candidate websites, scorecards and local forums to learn about their positions and backgrounds.
  • Focus on local issues: Consider which candidates best understand and will act on the issues that matter to your community.
  • Look beyond party labels: Evaluate candidates based on their individual merit, experience, and commitment to your area.
  • Don't fall for the Stadium trap: The major parties will make you believe this is an election about the Stadium or TasInsure. Government does a lot more than just distract with vanity projects.

Common Myths About Independents

Myth: "Voting for independents is a waste of my vote" Reality: With preferential voting, your vote flows to your next choice if your first preference doesn't win. Every vote influences the final outcome.
Myth: "Independent votes don't count" Reality: Every vote matters in preferential systems. Your preferences help determine which candidates are elected and influence the balance of power. The last government could only be formed with support of Independents, and when they came short on the budget, Independents were able to hold them to account.
Myth: "Independents cause instability" Reality: Independents can provide stable crossbench influence, prevent extreme policies, and ensure governments remain accountable to the people.
Myth: "They can't get things done" Reality: Many successful independent MPs have strong track records of delivering real results for their communities without party constraints.
Myth: "They're just failed major party politicians" Reality: Many independents are genuine community representatives with fresh perspectives, free from party baggage and obligations.
